Suggesting that git a fad is odd... however.. 

Helping our less technical members learn git, rather than
dividing their efforts on both git and svn would be better. SVN is dead,
and pointless to invest time learning. 

However, that what we are using here, so I wont challenge the design
choice further. However I would suggest that we don't use svn for any
other projects.
