Tried that (well I tried ls /tmp/petal_* > rm_list) but it didn't
work in this case, ls said too many arguments...

Also once I did have a script to delete all the file it took well
over an hour to run and this is on a fast box...

I think a nightly cron job is in order as William suggested :-)
