  # rpm -qa | grep compat
  compat-gcc-8-3.3.4.2
  compat-libstdc++-8-3.3.4.2
  compat-libstdc++-devel-8-3.3.4.2
  compat-gcc-c++-8-3.3.4.2

I guess I could uninstall everything and try again...

I did think it was really odd that tomcat had non-Free
depandancies... and I guess if I had this stuff installed then
perhaps I could have got away with only Free stuff...?

  # apt-cache search compat | grep java

  java-1.4.2-gcj-compat - JPackage runtime scripts for GCJ
