You may find the problem is actually 5.8.0 - if you're relying on UTF-8 
then you should go with 5.8.4 as a minimum (but why not try 5.8.5? :-). 
  Though I haven't tested it, it should be binary compat w/5.8.0 (5.8.1 
won't be).

If you have 30 min free, you can compile & install 5.8.5 in your home 
dir, and then try running the Petal tests.

Oh wait, I'm supposed to be lurking...  oops.
