Should read my own posts better.  An example, this:

  "The description has &, < and > in it"

Should become this:

  "The description has &amp;, &lt; and &gt; in it"

..but actually it is rendered as this:

  "The description has &amp;amp;, &amp;lt; and &amp;gt; in it"
